ALPHA BROTHER WRITES ANOTHER
THRILLER
Bro. Christopher R. Reich,
Al-'79, was born in Tokyo, Japan,
and grew up in Los Angeles, California.
After graduating in 1982 from the G.U. School of Foreign Service,
where he became a Delta Phi Epsilon brother on the 120th Line,
Bro. Reich worked in the private banking department of the Union Bank
of Switzerland in Geneva
before joining the bank's mergers and acquisitions department in
Zürich.
In 1995 he decided to pursue writing full-time.
He lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife and child.
Bro. Reich's first novel, Numbered
Account, was published in 1998
and tells the harrowing story of a young man willing to risk
everything
- his career, his integrity, and even his life -
to hunt down his father's killer.
Set in the secret, labyrinthine world of Swiss banking,
this book, with its detail and intelligence,
could have been written only by an insider.
Bro. Reich's new novel, The
Runner, published in March 2000,
is the story of an American judge in postwar Europe
and his personal vendetta against the Nazi
responsible for his brother's death.

WASHINGTON ALUMNI HOST RECEPTION
FOR THE PRESIDENT OF THE SAHRAWI REPUBLIC

Photographed above, at Alpha House on March 10,
1999,
are (l. to r.) Bro. Joseph K.
Grieboski, Al-'94, the President of
the Washington Alumni Association of Delta Phi Epsilon,
M. Moloud Said, Ambassador-at-Large of the Polisario, stationed in
Washington, D.C.,
H.E. Mohammed Abdulazziz, the President of the Sahrawi Republic,
and M. Ahmed Boukhari, the Representative of the Polisario to the
United Nations.
The Sahrawi Republic, formerly known as Western
Sahara,
and, previously, as Spanish Sahara,
was from 1885 to 1975 a colony of Spain.
In 1975, at the death of Generalissimo Franco,
Spain abruptly withdrew from the colony.
Western Sahara was promptly invaded by neighboring Morocco and
Mauretania,
which divided the former Spanish colony between them,
the northern two-thirds going to Morocco and the remainder to
Mauretania.
The inhabitants, however, mostly wanted to be an
independent country.
Backed by Algeria, the Sahrawis orgainized a resistance
called Polisario
and fought a fierce guerilla war.
Within a few years, Mauretania bowed out, transferring its portion to
Morocco.
In succeeding years the fighting gradually died down and
the U.N. was able to broker an agreement among all the concerned
parties
calling for a referendum of all Sahrawis later this year to
choose
between independence and becoming part of Morocco.

Independent Counsel
Kenneth Starr
is a Delta Phi Epsilon brother
The Washingtonian Magazine (March 1998) thought it had a scoop when it
reproduced the college yearbook entry of Bro. Kenneth W. Starr, Et-'67, showing that
President Clinton's nemesis had once been a member of the Young
Democrats. Of much greater interest and import, though, is that it
also shows Ken Starr to have been a Delta Phi Epsilon brother at
The George Washington University while Bill Clinton was a student
at nearby Georgetown University.
But wait, the story gets better. Another Delta Phi Epsilon brother
is Congressman Bob Barr (R, GA), who was initiated in the
spring of 1970 by Delta Chapter at the University of Southern
California in Los Angeles, CA.
