EPSILON CHAPTER

College opened August 18th with some nine thousand students thus starting the fall semester of 1924. After one week of chaos in which all attempted to get into classes and schedule their work, Epsilon came forth with her formal fall opening August 25th. All the boys were on hand and a good meeting was put across by the new incoming officers. Brother President James Watters announced that eight new men had been lined up so far. It was interesting to note that the boys picked were the best on the campus and that as far as our competitors are concerned, we saw them first. To all indications Epsilon is due for another splendid year.

The first smoker of the fall semester comes off Monday night, Sept. 1., at which time the new men will be brought around and introduced to the Brothers. The entertainment committee has arranged to have two outside speakers and their talks will pertain to the practical side of foreign trade.

Epsilon is now recognized as one of the best organizations in the college of commerce. Through the aid of the older brothers, Epsilon has been kept on the right track and has not had to meet any opposition from any other group, nor from the faculty. We have kept out of petty politics and therefore have been looked upon as a model organization.

Nearly all the boys who have graduated since the installation of Epsilon are in the field, working towards their individual goals. As all the boys are located in San Francisco, we find a strong alumni organization growing up, which will be a material aid to the active chapters. At our weekly luncheons we usually discuss all fraternity matters, thereby keeping the boys in the field closely bound together. At our last luncheon we had with us Brother Charles Carver (Delta), and Brother Leo Monahan (Alpha) from the East. Brother Carver said that he was surprised to see how strong the alumni were organized and how well the boys responded. We are exceedingly glad to announce that Epsilon has one Brother abroad. Brother Herb. Jackson has chosen China as his field and is starting in the Chinese Customs. We also have another who is due to join him soon. Brother Leland Wade, who graduated this summer, is now somewhere in New York with the International Banking Corporation. Wade expects to go to China within six months. Epsilon is real proud of these two men, especially as the chapter is only a year old.

In October we were fortunate to have three snappy smokers all held on the campus. The speakers chosen were from the South American Field. A twenty minute talk was given by the speakers, after which the meetings were thrown open to discussion. And the boys were ready with many questions.

Not to be outdone by the active chapter, the alumni have been holding their regular luncheons, bringing the boys in contact with business men who are usually brought around as guests. At one of these dinners the boys gave Brother Rufus von KleinSmid a reception, at which time the boys all had a chance to meet him and talk shop. During the course of events we were surprised by the appearance of Brother Charles Carver who spends his time here and there. So all in all, we had a fine round table, having present men from Epsilon, Delta, Alpha and Beta.

Our relations with the College of Commerce still are of the best and at the present the Fraternity is trying to help the college by co-operating with the faculty in every way possible.

During the summer semester Epsilon heard a very fine lecture by Mr. F. Suastequi. Mr. Suastequi is commercial attaché of Mexico and addressed the members of the chapter, and their friends, on "Commercial Relations with Mexico." He pointed out that chances for advancement there are many, but that it would take a great deal of concentrated work to reach the ends aimed for by the diplomatic and foreign trade services.

On October 30 Epsilon had the pleasure of the company of Brother Dr Rufus von KleinSmid at a luncheon which was held in San Francisco prior to his departure for Peru.

During the summer months of 1924, while college days were being forgotten by most of the members of Epsilon, the active members around the Bay Region used to get together with the alumni, and many interesting luncheons were held in San Francisco.

At one of these Brother Halleck Butts of Alpha was the guest. He was passing through San Francisco on his way to Tokyo to take over the office of commercial attaché for the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce of the United States.

Brother Chas. E. Herring of Alpha chapter proved a very interesting speaker at another luncheon during the summer. He is commercial attaché in Berlin and was able to clear up the question on the European situation and, in particular, of Germany. He was a member of the Dawes Commission.

Bro. Herring was passing through the land of Gold and Sunshine and stopped long enough on his "Round the World Tour" in San Francisco to take over the Key to the Golden Gate for a couple of days. Epsilon did its best to make that key look real!

A dinner dance was held in the honor of James E. Smiley and his wife on October 10 by Epsilon chapter. Jas. Smiley has long been in intimate contact with the organization at Berkeley, and has aided members of the chapter in many ways during their pursuit of knowledge and after they had finished that pursuit. Epsilon sends its well wishes to their very close friend, who has given them such valued advice so many times.

Smiley was making his departure from California for China, where he has been appointed as Assistant U. S. Trade Commissioner. He will remain in Shanghai for two years and then expects to return to the United States. Epsilon knows that he will return with even greater advice to the members of Delta Phi. Even though Smiley is not a member of Delta Phi, Epsilon, chapter feels some pride in having the close friendship of such a man.

Plans are being laid for the coming National Convention of Delta Phi Epsilon to be held on the Pacific Slopes this year. All attention is being centered on December 28 and 29, with the hope of seeing the best convention ever to be held by the fraternity. One luncheon will be sponsored by the alumni and another by the active chapter. It is also planned to hold a formal dance as a wind-up to the convention.
