Dear Brothers:

Greetings. Thought I would update you on my whereabouts. I left Bracewell & Patterson last summer to help Vinson & Elkins, another Houston-based law firm, open their New York office. I still concentrate in Latin American transactions; in fact, I've been in Brazil for the last three months working on several energy and telecom transactions for Enron Corp.

My office address is:

Boyd G. Carano, Esq.
c/o Vinson & Elkins, L.L.P.,
1325 Avenue of the Americas,
17th Floor,
New York, NY 10019.

You can also look me up at http://www.vinson-elkins.com, for the usual propaganda on what I've been up to professionally for the last few years.

Fraternally, Boyd

Dear Brothers:

It was a great pleasure for me to receive a copy of The SUN early this year.

Your records may show that I was National Treasurer in 1947-48, when the National Board of Governors was being hosted in the SAn Francisco Bay Area by Epsilon Chapter and the Northern California Alumni Association. Since then I married and had four children (all receiving their bachelor's degrees from a U.V. campus) while I was employed by Getz Bros & Co. (now owned by the Pritzger family of Chicago), an international marketing company.

Although my position could best be described as a purchasing manager, requiring extensive travelling throughout the United States, there were two trips to the Far East and Europe in 1952 and 1968 (each one taking me around the world).

Since retiring in 1979, I have devoted my time to maintenance of my home, keeping up with inflation by managing my income producing investments as best I can, and travelling whenever possible.

I look forward to hearing from fellow Epsilon alumni.

Fraternally yours,

Reno Franceschi

Dear Brothers:

I've been working at MicroStrategy for over two years now. We are a business intelligence software company. We project $168 Million in 1999 revenue; we are publicly traded under the symbol MSTR.

I draft and negotiate customer license agreements and partner agreements. The average employee age is 28. Lots of young women. Typical start up software company with casual dress code, lots of parties, and an assertive, visionary chief executive. I am having a good time with it.

My foreign service education has been put to good use!

I've not had much contact with other brothers. Occasionally I speak with

Chris Ringwald and Joe Farkas.

Fraternally, Chris Mueller

Dear Brothers:

In the years since my graduation, I spent the first five of them as an officer in the US Navy, based out of Yokosuka, Japan, making contact with other brothers somewhat difficult. I am not even sure if Occidental College has maintained an active chapter or not since my graduation in 1993.

I do know that Delta Phi Epsilon during my college years was an active and rewarding activity, through which I and fellow members hosted numerous conferences and speakers and published the College's foreign affairs journal.

The perspectives I gained placed me in good stead for my past work and my present job as an International Officer Instructor in Coronado, CA.

In any event, any information regarding Delta Phi Epsilon and the status of the Omicron Chapter would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely, Colin Sullivan

Dear Brothers:

I am continuing pursuing my interests in astonomy and ornithology, the latter with the Québec Ornithilogical Society, and my research on the Bayeux Tapestry, on which I gave a conference at the Museum of the Province of Québec.

Brothers from the early 1960s might remember me, when as a young assistant professor of French at G.U. I was one of the nine teachers, including Jack Giles, Joe Kane, Gunther Ruff, Alfonso Espinosa, Joe LeMoine, John Leahy, Jules Davids, and Jim Huthmacher, who comprised the "Faculty Directive Committee" that helped save Alpha House for DPE when SFS Dean John Parr was insisting that it be sold.

Good Luck - Bonne Chance à vous tous (et toutes)

Fraternally, James E. LaFollette

Dear Brothers:

After being initiated into Delta Phi Epsilon in March 1937, I was Vice-President and later President of Epsilon Chapter. Following graduation from Cal - Berkeley in 1938, I was elected President of our Fraternity's Northern California Alumni Association, serving for two years.

In 1940 I went to Alaska and in 1941 received a graduate degree from the University of Alaska. Later that year I was named the Principal of the Naval Dependents School in Kodiak, Alaska, where I was working when Pearl Harbor was attacked.

My school was closed down when the U.S. declared war against Japan and I returned to San Francisco, where I enlisted in the Army in March 1942.

In November 1942 I landed under fire in French Morocco as a member of the Army Counter-Intelligence Corps. In 1944 I left Morocco for Allied Forces Headquarters in Italy, with details to IV Corps and 5th Army.

Following the Italian assignment, which ended in 1946, I served in a number of different countries and decorated by several of them. I retired at the rank of Colonel in 1977.

Fraternally, James T. O. Braafladt

Dear Brothers:

A few lines to bring you up to date on my continued professional and personal movements. Last September, I accepted a position as Director of Environmental Claims for AIG Technical Services, Inc. It is the environmental claims handling branch of the AIG group of insurance companies. My job basically consists of evaluating and settling very large, very ugly lawsuits involving environmental matters.

While the money is not quite as good as that in private practice, the benefits are better. Most importantly, the move gives me time with my wife and young children. Besides, it's great fun being the client instead of the attorney. Since making the transition, my insights have apparently become more insightful and my witicisms far more witty -- at least according to the attorneys working for me. All this makes the daily schlep from the wilds of central Jersey into downtown New York worth it.

The restoration of our 250 year old farmhouse is, if not complete, as close as its going to get to completion for quite some time. We are settling in nicely.

I hope all is well with you and all brothers. Best regards.

Dave Barry

Dear Brothers:

As some surviving old timers from Alpha and Epsilon Chapters might remember me, I will try to put a few of my experiences in writing, although last year I suffered a stroke and both my memory and writing ability have declined.

I was a member of Epsilon Chapter of DPE, and also of Alpha Chapter when I lived in Washington, DC.

I am now 89 years old. During my years as an alumnus brother I held positions in world trade and international affairs. I have also held civil service and appointed positions in the governments of the California State Government, the US Federal Government, and in Brazil and Argentina. I have lived and worked throughout North and South America, Asia and Europe. At one time I spoke six languages. The only ones I speak fluently now are English and Spanish.

I have been married three times. All three of my wives and both of my sons have died. I am now being cared for by a lovely widow lady who lost her husband a few years ago. At age 89, I do not plan to marry again.

I still love DPE and the influences it had in leading me through an interesting life in foreign service.

Dear Brothers:

I was very sorry indeed to learn of the passing of Bro. John Donahue, who was, of course, a member of Alpha at the same time as yours truly. In living abroad for all but short intervals, I sort of lost contact; and I was completely unaware that he had "taken up the cloth." He was a very fine person, friendly but discreet, as I recall him. My prayer has been, and repeated for you as a witness, that his soul has already found that Eternal Rest, which Christ promised all believers. And, of course, I do likewise for Bros. James Knott and Douglas MacArthur II.

Dear Brothers:

After a long career in marine insurance, I retired in 1986 and have been active since then as a consultant and expert witness.

As an expert witness I testified on behalf of the Columbus America Discovery Group in the case of the Central America that sank in 1857 with a cargo of gold. The story of the Central America was related in a book titled Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea by Gary Kinder.

I also testified in another case involving the Law of Salvage. In this case I represented the underwriters that insured the Lady Elgin when she sank in 1861 during a voyage from Chicago to Milwaukee.

Last summer I testified in Federal Court in Anchorage, Alaska, on behalf of a salvor claiming title to the wreck, and its cargo, of the Islander, which sank in 1901 carrying a cargo ofv gold.

In April of 1998 I attended a meeting of salvors in Philadelphia to help form a trade organization called "ProSea." This is a group of salvors that are dedicated to search for ancient wrecks and preserve the artifacts, as well as returning the artifacts to the commercial world.

I also attended a Law of Salvage seminar in Newport, RI, in August and met with salvors and maritime lawyers involved in salvage law.

I was President of Beta Chapter in the early 1950s and represented Beta Chapter at the [Fraternity's 1954 National Convention in] California. I was also active in the New York Alumni Association and was a good friend of [former National President] Doctor Horn. I was awarded the DElta Phi Epsilon Honor Key for service.

I would like to hear from my Beta Brothers.

Regards to all my Delta Phi Epsilon Brothers.

- Brother George

Dear Brothers:

I am truly amazed...the use of internet technology is definitely changing the way we communicate. i can't believe how complete the Al Chap website is. I look forward to the rest of the house tour. would like to see photos of the terrace room and ellis island.

Iwill send membership dues soon. I just received my copy of The SUN, so I see that you have my correct address. all is fine here. adjusting to changes in life, but enjoying the Boston area. I am in charge of fundraising at Thayer Academy, so I can appreciate your efforts to raise money for the House. my second daughter is back at Georgetown after taking some time off. this spring is her last semester. my oldest daughter graduated in '95 and my son is a sophomore at Columbia. yikes--only two more years of tuition payments and maybe i can have a life.

I haven't been in DC in some time, but I do hope to get there this spring before my daughter finishes.

Best wishes and congratulations on a great website

- Mark
